It whirls in the atmosphere above Venus’ South Pole - it is an amazingly bizarre double vortex, found by a new mission to the planet. Thanks to the unmanned Venus Express spacecraft for spotting this amazing phenomenon in the planet.
Winds of super-hurricane force are responsible for the formation of the ‘double eyed’ vortex in its very first swing around Venus, according to the European Space Agency. The pictures taken by the Venus Express also reveal a collar of cold air around the vortex structure. The presence of this collar is possibly due to the downwards recycling of cold air.
