U.S. astronaut Sunita Williams has set a new record for the longest uninterrupted space flight by a woman.

At 0547 GMT on Saturday, Mrs Williams, who is a flight engineer aboard the International Space Station, surpassed the previous record of 188-days and four-hours that was set by Shannon Lucid in 1996.

She also has to her credit the record for the longest space walk by a woman. She managed to reach 22 hours and 27 minutes thus breaking the previous record of 21 hours which was held by astronout Kathryn Thornton.

Mrs Williams, who has also ‘run’ the Boston Marathon on a treadmill during her six month space stay, is due to return to Earth on Thursday on the Atlantis.
