NASA’s space elevator global competition to build a space elevator in New Mexico is fascinating but a little heart breaking too. Fascinating, because such a structure could eventually permit delivery of great quantities of cargo and people to orbit, and with transportation costs of a fraction of the traditional methods of launching a payload into orbit and heart breaking, because only some researchers and entrepreneurs have shown interest in NASA’s contest. Boeing and Lockheed Martin haven’t shown much support for this until their own profit is assured.
That’s really good that all machines must get energy from sources such as sunlight, lasers or microwaves because most of the weight on space crafts is of fuel and by cutting that weight the crafts will definitely go at greater speeds and at lesser costs.
