I’m glad to hear that NASA Administrator Mike Griffin gave the go-ahead for what could be the last space shuttle repair mission for one of the greatest scientific instruments of all time.
Mike Griffin did the right thing by seeking a second opinion from the engineers, not the accountants. The “cradle to grave” cost of the servicing mission is estimated at $900 million but it sure deserves it.
Hubble is a tremendous tool that has allowed us to learn more than we could have ever hoped, and if they can fix it so that it is still giving us that tremendous data, go for it!
The news surely needs to be greeted with grand ovation.
The only concern was astronauts safety but it looks like NASA is in pretty good shape to get the astronaut to the repair site. The tentative mission plan calls for another shuttle to be placed on standby for launch, to rescue the Hubble crew members in the event of another Columbia scenario. This further adds to the brilliance of the mission.
