NASA is undertaking an undersea mission for testing space medicine concepts and moon walking techniques. The twelve day mission comprises a team of two astronauts, one flight surgeon and a doctor. The crew would be undertaking a number of advanced medical technology experiments which includes robotic telesurgery on simulated patients. This mission is expected to offer advantages for long duration human space flight missions.
Robotic telesurgery technology and hands-on telesurgery demonstrations would help in overcoming interplanetary communication lag time. The experiments are expected to help astronauts on future missions to Mars and moon. The crew would also be conducting undersea moon walks for testing the concept for future lunar exploration. Simulated undersea structure would also be created with the aid of remotely operated vehicle and geological samples collection would also be practiced for developing tools and techniques for collection of lunar samples for helping future astronauts.
