NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has always provided us with some fascinating images of the Universe.
This time the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 of the space telescope has captured the colorful demise of a Sun-Like star that is some 4,000 light years away from us.
This star is shedding off its outer layers of gas, which formed a cocoon around the star’s remaining core. During the process the star is releasing huge amounts of Ultraviolet light that is making it glow.
The white dwarf is at the center is known as NGC 2440 and is one of the hottest known with an average surface temperature of around 200,000 degrees Celsius.
The colors in the image correspond to different material that is expelled by the star. Blue color represents helium, blue-green correspond to oxygen and red to nitrogen and hydrogen.
Now we are watching these stars in the dying stages, our Sun also has the same end but that is around 5 billion years away.
