Kidney stones, a problem for astronauts

At least 14 American crew members have developed kidney stones in the last 5 years! While in space, the zero-gravity environment lead the astronauts to losing bone calcium and muscle strength. And, this calcium can end up in their kidneys, risking them with developing kidney stones.

To find a solution to this growing problem, the University of Minnesota researchers have identified a way for astronauts to reduce their risk of developing kidney stones while in space – exercise.

The July 2006 print issue of the Journal of Urology will be publishing this study. It is presently available online.
