greenland ice sheetsA better break from the dire after-effects of global warming. With the Arctic Ice sheets shrinking, which may eventually lead to the disappearance of river from the world map, you may still breathe a sigh of relief with another finding. Thanks to the ESA scientists. After gathering data on Greenland for more than a decade, they have reported that the island’s ice sheet is actually growing at its interior. The 10 instruments of Envisat helped to measure various properties of the Earth from orbit. Data collection began in 1991 with the radar altimeter instrument on board ESA’s ERS-1, followed by ERS-2, until the recent Envisat. The ice sheet of Greenland seems to be thickening at a rate of 6.4 cm (2.6 inches) a year above altitudes of 1,500 meters (5000 feet). Below that altitude, the ice sheets are decreasing in thickness.
