Giant Magellan Telescope The competition to built the world’s first ‘next generation’ telescope is on. Astronomers around the globe have convened to participate in the development of the new facilities, aspiring to observe time on the telescopes as they complete with their building of the Giant Magellan Telescope. It would be a huge device capable of beaming far enough into the abysmal universe from Earth to see light coming out from the very first stars and galaxies. The astronomy community listed the construction of such a facility as its top priority for this decade of ground-based astronomy, back in 2001. Wishing to commemorate the scope’s first beaming into the astronomical goodies in 2014, Caltech and its partners the University of California, the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy and the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy are in the design and development phase of the Thirty Meter ‘next generation’ Telescope.
