China has called for an international treaty convention for peaceful utilization of outer space.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged the countries of the world, especially those having an active space programme, on Friday to adopt and sign an international convention at the earliest possible date.

The premier was speaking at a press conference in the Great Hall of the People after the conclusion of the National People’s Congress, the annual parliament of China.

Remarkably, when China launched an antisatellite missile on January 11, 2007 Wen sought to allay the fears of the skeptic international community by saying ‘the test is not targeted at any country, nor will it threaten any country, nor does it violate any international treaties.’

China is always opposed to arms race in outer space, we always advocate peaceful utilization of outer space, he said.

Wen also said Beijing was repeating its calls for an international convention banning weapons in outer space.
