A huge asteroid is hurtling toward Earth! But, there is a hope as astronomers expect it to miss the planet narrowly. The space rock — discovered in December 2004 — is called 2004 XP14. It will pass the earth by a little more than the average distance of moon from Earth. And, this is exceptionally close!
In astronomical terms the asteroid is 268,624 miles away at its closest approach, according to The Scotsman. This asteroid produced concerns at first that it could hit Earth later in the century. But, subsequent studies ruled out the fear of such a collision.

Why sensationalize this event, when media have already exhausted themselves and forgotten it? OK, there are bogies out there and they all want to kill us dead — but a quarter-mil miles (and the unstated number of years) away are comfy statistics. When it nears us (in 2029 or whenever), won’t we have a few Reagan or Bush missiles left to shoo it away? Get back to basics, boys ...
